618 had it's very first Health Fair March 8.2003 and it was a
big hit with the members and there families. Everyone was
treated to a number of booths concerning health care. Over 40
vendors were on hand to talk to the members. Many of Local 618s
retirees were also on hand for the event.
The
staff of Local 618s Health & Welfare plan was on hand to answer
any members concerns on their health plan. Attendance prizes
were drawn regularly so just about everyone in attendance
received something. The members children received 618 balloons
and also enjoyed the entertainment put on by the clown. The
Local 618 Officers were on hand to enjoy the event and meet some
of the members families.

Officers Attend Missouri-Kansas-Nebraska Conference! |
|
 |
Secretary
Treasurer Guerra and Recording Secretary Marvin Kropp attended
the Conference held in Jefferson City, Mo. which was billed as
Teamster Lobby Day on February 25th & 26. Most of the focus was
on some of the proposed legislation that is being presented at
the Missouri General Assembly. Some of the proposals is
legislation that would turn back the clock on Missouri's workers
compensation laws. |
|
What the law
proposed would mean is that repetitive injuries such as carpal
tunnel syndrome would be eliminated. (Example) A grocery store
clerk or warehouse worker or assembly line worker who, as part
of work, repeatedly reaches and swipes would not be compensated
for wrist or elbow related injuries because a single accident
did not cause the disability. Rather it was incurred over time
after years of service to a company. Also the new proposed
legislation would put workers at risk of lawsuits because the
legislation allows employers to sue employees to recover worker
compensation payments by the employer. There is much new
legislation being made in Jefferson City and it is not being in
favor of the working men & women. That is why we must educate
our coworkers to pay attention to what is going on with our
elected officials in Jefferson City. If the legislators are not
in favor of Organized Labor, we don't need them. Secretary
Treasurer Guerra and Recording Secretary Kropp were able to talk
with many of the legislators while at the Capitol to give them
input on concerns for ours members and there families. While
there Secretary Treasurer Guerra and Recording Secretary Kropp
also had the chance to talk with Lieutenant Governor Joe
Maxwell(D) and State Auditor Claire McCaskell(D). |
